What Is the Clean Swell App?
The Clean Swell app, launched by Ocean Conservancy in 2016, empowers individuals and organizations to track their coastal cleanup efforts. Participants log the trash they collect and the data uploads to Ocean Conservancy’s global ocean trash database in real-time. This data provides critical information to scientists and policymakers worldwide.
SmartLogic worked with Ocean Conservancy to scale the Clean Swell app and ensure functionality continues to meet the growing needs of volunteers worldwide. Our team worked on several key features to simplify user experience when recording collection data, tracking progress, and sharing their impact with the community.

The Global Impact of Ocean Conservancy
Since its launch, Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) has become the world’s largest beach and waterway cleanup, mobilizing over 18 million volunteers to remove more than 385 million pounds of trash globally.
In 2023, nearly 500,000 volunteers collected 8 million pounds of debris, including millions of single-use items like cigarette butts, plastic bottles, and bottle caps—items that often break down into microplastics, causing lasting harm to marine life.
The Clean Swell app plays a crucial role in these cleanups, allowing volunteers to log and track their data in real time. This data is critical to understanding the scale and nature of plastic pollution. The information feeds into Ocean Conservancy’s global marine debris database, the largest of its kind. Insights from this data have already driven significant policy changes, such as California’s SB 54 and Florida’s balloon release ban.
By making cleanup data more accessible and actionable, the Clean Swell app allows volunteers to contribute not only to immediate environmental improvement but also to long-term solutions through policy advocacy and global research on ocean pollution.
