SmartLogic partnered with GymRatX to transform an early-stage fitness platform concept into a production-ready mobile application built around video challenges, community competition, and positive engagement.

Francisco Miranda and his son Noah had a vision for GymRatX: a social platform where athletes, gym-goers, and active people can join a community and share training challenges.

They were new to the software development process and still learning what it would take to bring their idea to life. Turning GymRatX into a tangible product required UX design, technical planning, and the organization of hundreds of small details and decisions that shape a custom software project.

As Francisco explained:

“I learned a lot through the process. From the main idea to the functions to the architecture of the entire process. It's very complicated. We had to think about every single part of the app... colors, texture, versions, sound. I didn't know what I was getting into, to be honest.”

To find the right partner for this endeavor, they sought out a software development shop local to the DMV, met with SmartLogic, and knew that they were the right fit for their geographic and technical needs.

SmartLogic worked alongside the GymRatX team through an interactive development process to help them refine their concept, define requirements, design the user interface, and build the platform architecture.

From Idea to Implementation

Many of the details needed to be worked out as the project moved forward.

Rather than beginning with a formal discovery phase or a fully defined product roadmap, the team collaborated throughout the build to clarify features, make design decisions, and translate Francisco’s ideas into working software.

Francisco appreciated the team’s willingness to engage with the concept and contribute along the way:

Bri was very supportive and actually enthusiastic with the project. Inputting ideas. I guess that’s part of her job. And then the rest of the team starting from Alicia, Charles, Stephen, they were very supportive and they understood from day one what it is that we want to build.

Prototyping

Startups often need help actualizing and defining their concept. Ideas in the mind and on paper need to be demonstrated and refined before the actual build can begin.

To accelerate the process, SmartLogic used AI to vibecode proof-of-concept prototypes, enabling the GymRatX team to interact with working demos early in the project lifecycle. These prototypes helped make ideas tangible, allowing them to explore user workflows and evaluate potential features before investing significant development resources.

The vibecoded iteration process was particularly useful for balancing the founders’ vision with practical considerations, including budget, timeline, technical complexity, and long-term maintainability. The prototypes accelerated exploration, but the architecture, production code, security decisions, and final implementation remained under the direction of SmartLogic’s product and engineering team.

Product Design & User Workflows

GymRatX combines elements of social media, friendly competition, and fitness accountability into a unique mobile app experience. For motivation and connection, the app is a community-driven platform where users can showcase their achievements, participate in user-generated challenges, and receive accolades from their peers.

The central experience is a short-form video feed featuring challenge submissions from the GymRatX community. Users can swipe between recent videos, respond with one of five preset reactions, flag inappropriate content, and discover new challenges. Each video is linked to a specific fitness challenge, encouraging users to move beyond passive viewing and participate.

From the Challenge tab, users can browse active and completed challenges, review winning submissions, or create a new challenge for the community. Challenges operate within defined timeframes, including a submission period followed by a voting window that allows the community to help select a winner.

Although Francisco initially described the experience as “a lot like TikTok,” translating that familiar interaction into a new fitness platform required much more than recreating a video feed. Every challenge involved interconnected screens, user actions, content states, deadlines, voting rules, and notifications that needed to function together clearly.

Designing for a Safer Social Experience

User safety was considered throughout the product design and development process. Rather than replicating typical social media features, the GymRatX and SmartLogic teams evaluated how each type of interaction would affect the community they wanted to create.

Direct messaging and traditional follower systems were deferred from the initial product. Their absence also limits opportunities for unwanted contact between users. Moderation tools such as content flagging and more limited forms of commenting and reaction were incorporated to support a more positive environment.

These decisions demonstrate an important part of custom product development: identifying not only what an application should include, but what it should exclude to support the desired user experience.

An Agile Approach

For an early-stage product, requirements rarely remain static from the beginning to the end of the project. Ideas evolve as founders interact with prototypes, see features in context, and develop a deeper understanding of what their users will need.

SmartLogic used an Agile development approach to keep the GymRatX team involved throughout the process. Rather than disappearing for months and returning with a finished product, the team broke development into short cycles of design, implementation, demonstration, and feedback.

During recurring meetings, SmartLogic demonstrated progress, answered questions, reviewed priorities, and gathered feedback from Francisco. This allowed the founders to see how individual decisions affected the broader product and gave the development team an opportunity to clarify requirements before moving further into implementation.

The iterative process was especially valuable because GymRatX’s features are deeply interconnected. Decisions about challenge timing, voting, video visibility, reactions, moderation, and notifications could affect numerous screens and user states. Working incrementally allowed the team to identify those relationships and adjust the product as its workflows became clearer.

Outcome

Through prototyping, product design, and iterative mobile development, SmartLogic helped transform GymRatX from an ambitious concept into a functional mobile platform with a defined user experience and scalable technical foundation.

The process gave Francisco and Noah a functional application and a clear understanding of their product, including how its features connect, how users move through the platform, and what is required to develop and maintain custom software responsibly.
